The saints are not interchangeable heroes, and their lives are not clean. They are particular Christians whose words, failures, courage, and forms of attention can help us follow Jesus in our own place. Each page begins with the person’s own writings where they survive, then listens to early witnesses and later tradition without confusing the three.
