The saints are not interchangeable heroes, and their lives are not clean. They are particular Christians whose words, failures, courage, and forms of attention can help us follow Jesus in our own place. The shelf also gathers elders and communities whose teaching is best read together. Each page distinguishes their own words, early witnesses, and later tradition.
