Imitation of Christ

Jesus’s practices, surprising actions, and ways of engaging people

Jesus withdraws to pray, shares tables with the wrong people, answers questions with questions, touches those others avoid, and prays for those killing him. His practices and surprising actions make his teaching visible. This study attends to the particular ways he meets people: what he notices, what he asks, when he speaks, and when he remains silent.

Each entry begins with a scene in Scripture, examines the text and its historical setting, and listens to early Christian interpretation. The question of imitation follows from that close reading: what is Jesus doing here, and what might following him require?
