The Modes

How he speaks — fifteen kinds of utterance

“No man ever spoke like this man!”
John 7:46 — the officers sent to arrest him

Each of the corpus’s 489 utterances is tagged with one or more modes — the kind of speech it is. The categories are deliberately not exclusive: a single saying may command, promise, and reveal at once. Counts are utterances; each reference lands on the saying’s tag row in its book page, where the full text stands in four translations.
